International Women’s Day 2013

On Friday 8th March 2013 the International Women’s Day Celebration was held in Pensão Flor de Coimbra. Despite the awful wet weather it was well attended by 23 ladies from a variety of different countries and cultures who all share a common interest of learning, exchanging ideas and socialising in pleasant surroundings.

The guest speaker was Maria Teresa Ferreira who has a PhD in forensic anthropology gained at the University of Coimbra and is co-founder of the “Styx – Anthropology” project, integrated in the firm Dryas. She works as a physical Anthropologist in the field as well as in the laboratory and has participated in several scientific investigations and is also an author of several articles.

Maria Teresa gave us a very interesting insight into this branch of anthropology that deals with the genetic aspect of human development and its physical variations and how it is used as “a tool to peer into the past through bones.” Maria Teresa was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable speaker and created much interest and questions from her audience.

Eduardo and Jorge cooked excellent food as usual that contributed to a successful evening enjoyed by all who attended, especially the ladies who joined the group for the first time and who hopefully will join us again at the next event.

New Year’s Meeting 2013

On January 11th, Wingcoimbra got together at the guesthouse Casa de Pombal to welcome 2013 . New members have joined “the regulars”, which made the first meeting of the year gratifying and exciting . Nothing better than start the new year being with old friends and meeting new ones.

Contrasting with the cold grey weather outside, the atmosphere in the cosy dining room got warmer and warmer with conversation, excellent food prepared by Else and Anja and Filipa Pato’s rosé, opened, as per usual by our “expert” Antoinet! Anja gave her the title of “Opperplopper”. And suddenly the room was filled with happiness and laughter . What better way to start the year and face the overused word “crisis”.

Um brinde às Mulheres: ‘here’s to us’

The enologist Filipa Pato was the guest speaker at our traditional meeting held to celebrate ‘São Martinho das Mulheres.’

Filipa, who was awarded a Wine Oscar for being the best winemaker of 2011, talked about her project entitled ‘Authentic Wines Without Make-up’, highlighting how she has combined her academic background in Biochemistry with the knowledge gained from her upbringing in a family of renowned winemakers.  She also highlighted the need to create new projects without losing traditional grapes and winemaking methods.

What other topic could be more appropriate nowadays?

And what better way to celebrate San Martinho, with excellent wine, traditional food, a warm atmosphere and in the company of women with ‘stamina’. A toast to women: ‘Here’s to us’.

International Women’s Day 2012

We were 21 women form several countries, as usual. This year’s presentation was held by Nicole Felicité. Nicole graduated in Medicine at The Medicine Faculty from Nice, and has a DIU (Inter University Diploma) in Morphologic and Anti ageing Medicine (“Body image and ageing prevention”) from the medicine Faculty Paris 13. She also holds an International Diploma in Mesotherapy from the Medicine Faculty from Bordeaux.

Nicole Félicité

Nicole talked aboutintegrative holistic medicine and anti-ageing. This kind of medicine treats image, both through aesthetic and cosmetic care, as well as form, thanks to nutrition therapy and supplements, biotherapy and sound advice on healthy life styles. After her interesting presentation, there were a lot of questions. But nobody asked about the effects of alcohol on the aging process. Probably we were all too scared to hear the answer…

For the first time the presentation was held in the small room next to the dining room. It felt very cosy. The big advantage of this change was that the dinner table could be prepared in advance.

Dinner was wonderful, as usual. As dessert, Eduardo surprised us with a recently developed local sweet from Coimbra. I They are called Crúzios and they are lovely.

New Year’s meeting 2012

On January 13, Friday, fourteen wing members got together at Casa de Pombal to welcome the New Year.

Thank God Brigitte came, otherwise we would have been 13! I have always been told that we can not sit 13 people at a table. Anyway.. .we didn’t actually sat at the table. We had excellent finger food, beautifully presented by Else and Anja, we drank champagne, opened with expertise by Antoinet, we talked, laughed. Ahmy’s photos will show what I am trying to describe.

But we, the organization, also arranged new meetings. Just to arouse your curiosity, our talk on March 8th, whose title cannot yet be revealed, promises to be of special interest to all of us, from the youngest to the oldest, none of whom is immune to the aging process.

What better way to start 2012!

On Sunday, November 13th, WINGcoimbra met to celebrate San Martinho das Mulheres in our usual place, Flôr de Coimbra.
We were very pleased to have some new members attending, as well as the ‘regulars’.

Sandra Naranjo, our speaker, gave a workshop entitled “A Healthy balance from our body posture”. After a brief theorectical introduction, she suggested, in her gentle manner, some useful exercises and activities for strengthening and stretching our muscles, raising awareness about the importance of good posture. We did try to do some of the exercises, which was really fun.

Ahmy, our photographer, took a few snapshots, which might be a bit blurred, though, since it’s not easy photographing moving subjects.

The workshop was followed by a delicious meal, prepared with creativity as ever by Eduardo. This was our last meeting this year. We look forward to seeing you all next year at the Casa Pombal on January 13th to welcome in the new year.

WING-Pre-Summer-Meet-Up

Patricia Couto was be our speaker and talked about the most successful and the most influential art forger ever, the Dutch painter Han van Meegeren. The specialty of van Meegeren was Vermeer. With his fake paintings he sold as being original, he amassed a fortune worth more than half a billion dollars in today’s currency. After the van Meegeren exposure in 1945, a wave of self-criticism surged through the world’s art museums and many an Old Master or a Vermeer disappeared from their walls.

Patricia, member of Centro de Estudos Comparatistas (UL), was born in the Netherlands, studied Germanic Philology in Coimbra (FLUC 1975) and holds an MA in Comparative Literature (FLUL 1996). She has worked at Portuguese schools and taught Dutch Language and Culture at FLUL. She has translated authors such as Jan Slauerhoff, Cees Nooteboom, Gerrit Komrij and Etty Hillesum into Portuguese. Currently, she is writing her PhD thesis on Glazemaker’s seventeenth century translation of Fernão Mendes Pinto’s Peregrinaçam.…..

After this presentation we had a special summer-dinner. This was our last activity before the summer and we will restart in September with our monthly meetings in Galeria Bar.

International Women’s Day 2011

Wing celebrated Women International day with a special Carnival touch this year (take a look at the photos and you will see what I mean) in our customary meeting place, Flôr de Coimbra. Around sixteen women from a variety of different countries, including Columbia, England, the Netherlands, Spain, and The Philippines, to name but a few, got together  to learn, exchange ideas, socialize and have fun.

Unexpectedly our guest speaker, Anja  Masteling, had to fly to the Netherlands due to family matters, but her colleague Regina Azevedo volunteered to give the presentation herself, as they have been working together  for 20 years in Assol.

The title “Walking slowly” refers metaphorically to the long, slow itinerary they have followed working with disabled people. Quoting Regina they have to be approached in a very gentle way, “as light as an angel’s feather.”

And art is indeed the best therapy! The presentation was very moving and Regina conveyed all the energy and dedication required to perform such a noble task.

Eduardo cooked excellent food, as ever, prepared with creativity and a lot of care. All in all, a very warm meeting in an otherwise cold Carnival day!

New Year’s meeting 2011

On January 9th a group of 13 members of WING Coimbra met at Casa de Pombal to welcome the New Year!
Else and Anja prepared excellent finger food, which we had with a glass of sparkling Champagne. Antoinet, the official bottle opener of the party did an excellent job! An expert!
The atmosphere was warm, relaxed and very cosy – The Dutch language even has a word for it: gesselig (sorry I can not spell it !!)
Spending quality time together, talking, exchanging ideas, eating, laughing , drinking… what better way to start the Year!
Wish you all a sparkling 20011!

Women’s “Santa Martinha”

On November 21st we celebrated S. Martinho das mulheres in our customary meeting place, Flôr de Coimbra.

Around twenty women from a variety of different countries , including Switzerland, England, the Netherlands, Spain, and The Philippines, to name but a few, got together to learn, exchange ideas, socialize and “eat, drink and be merry.”

Our guest speaker was Cathelijne, a Dutch PHD research student who is currently investigating the impact of fire on the landscape. Her presentation was on fire, by which I mean she gave her talk with the sparkle of the young research student who loves what she is doing.

Although we usually associate fires with destruction and soil degradation, Cathelijne explained how fires actually have their benefits. Fire can be used to fight fire and “queimadas” are still used to clean the soil and fertilize it. We do hope Cathelijne’s “experimental fire” will contribute to implementing better fire-prevention practices.

Eduardo cooked excellent food, as ever, prepared with creativity with ingredients which reflected the season – plenty of chestnuts and delicious “Míscaros”, a kind of mushroom that grows in the wild in Portugal.

All in all, a very warm meeting in an otherwise cold November Sunday.
